Why Highways Are So Important

(North Carolina) - Transportation is essential to the prosperity and quality of life of all Canadians. Much of Canada& 39;s domestic and international freight is hauled to Canada - 24400-kilometer network of national roads, the backbone of Canadian trade. In fact, the Canadian transportation system carries more than $ 1 trillion value of goods annually.
if our transportation system is not working smoothly, it affects our quality of life - from how much time eliminate travel, to what is available on store shelves and the extent of the costs.
while each province and territory is responsible for road safety through the implementation of laws and maintaining the highways, infrastructure and transport Canada invested $ 600 million in the framework of the strategic program of highway infrastructure (the ship) to improve highways in Canada over five years. That work with the provinces and territories to identify those parts of the national road network that - because of the growing traffic and increased trade - need immediate attention.
in In addition, the vessel includes $ 100 million to fund initiatives to better integrate our national transportation system. This includes funding for the deployment of intelligent transportation systems across Canada to improve things such as traffic and the flow of goods, passenger information, and collect the proceeds of public transport, and resources necessary to improve the flow of traffic at border crossing points.
improving efficiency of border crossings is important for Canada in economic development. For example, lacolle - Champlain border crossing forms the most important trade corridor between Quebec and New York State. More than $ 15 billion of the value of imported goods travel through this border crossing annually, with a daily volume of more than 2000 trucks. SHIP project is being would improve the flow of people and goods in this vital crossing, as well as enhanced security and safety. Similar projects in place at border crossings in Windsor, Ontario, and lower mainland British Columbia.
the strategic infrastructure Highway Programme (Ship) supports trade, tourism and investment in Canada; sustains strategic investments in all parts of the country to reflect regional needs; makes Canadian rapid transport system more reliable and efficient, technologically advanced, and improves the quality of life of Canadians through the promotion safer and more environmentally sustainable transportation.
